Freshman Business major
Ashley Hanlen, known
simply as “Ash”, is a native St. Louisan. Ashley
decided to attend college in her hometown so she
could help lead Saint Louis University to
prominence and recognition. (Going home every
other night to eat dinner with her |
 |
family and do her laundry
had nothing to do with her decision. Promise.)
When Ash is not going home to hang with Mom, Dad,
& her younger sisters, she can be found scaring
Jacy, studying, icing her ankle, or giggling
uncontrollably. If you still can’t find her, look
in the practice facility. She’ll be the one on the
gun shooting three pointers by herself .

Diary Entry
#1
Rise and shine St. Louis! Today is November 13, 2009 and
it is a very special day. Not only is this the first day
I have ever written a journal entry for Coach Shimmy,
but it’s also game day baby! Since this is my first
entry, I want to begin by introducing myself and filling
you in on some things you might not know about me. My
name is Ashley Hanlen and I am a freshman from St.
Louis, MO. (Yes…it’s true… I have to drive a whole ten
minutes to get back home…Quite a road trip let me tell
ya). I have one older brother, Drew, who is a sophomore
playing basketball at Belmont; a younger sister, Maddie,
who is most-definitely the diva of the family; a younger
sister LuLu, who we adopted from Haiti and couldn’t be
any cuter if she tried; my mom, Colleen, who I want to
be just like when I become a mother; and my dad, Brady,
who is the best dad in the world! I graduated from St.
Joseph Academy and soon realized that I wanted to
continue playing basketball in college. With that being
said, when I found out Coach Shimmy was interested in
offering me a once in a lifetime chance, there was no
doubt in my mind that SLU was the perfect fit for me!
Now that I have become a little more familiar with SLU,
I can let you know how much I truly love it here. Every
single day, I wake up and think to myself how privileged
I am to be attending such a great school that will reach
me one step closer to success. When it comes to
academics, the transition was fairly easy for me.
Basketball…couldn’t love my teammates and coaching staff
any more than I do. Social life…what social life? Haha
just kidding! For some reason, no matter how busy my
schedule is, I always seem to have time to hang out with
my friends, go shopping, watch a movie, or just do
whatever I feel like doing!
Although it’s pretty early in the season and everyone’s
probably thinking that we’re just now starting to mesh
and get to know each other… that is not the case. I feel
like we’ve known each other for years and we all get
along so well to the point where we are one, happy
family. With that being said, over the past few months,
some of my favorite memories with my team include: Our
Halloween party where Kim and Mal were gettin’ down on
the dance floor, scaring Jacy in the laundry room (to
the point where she screamed, dropped all of her
clothes, and ran back up the stairs to our apartment),
team slumber party in the locker room, replaying the
most important aspects of practice during film (Nic
falling face first into the ground with her hands behind
her back), and just being able to have a blast at all
times on and off the court! Although these are just a
few of the great experiences I have had up to this
point, I can guarantee you the list will go on and on.
I’m really looking forward to getting this season
started!
